Coverdale Bible (Facsimile of 1535 Edition)

The Coverdale Bible was the first complete version of the English Bible to be printed. It was compiled and translated by Myles Coverdale. Because Coverdale had no training in Hebrew or Greek, his Bible was a "translation of a translation." He made use of the Latin text, but also relied on other translations, particularly those of Tyndale and Luther.

Coverdale printed his Bible during reign of King Henry VIII, before the persecutions of Queen Mary from 1553 to 1558. Henry VIII was receptive to Coverdale's Bible, although he did not grant it authorized status. Coverdale had been accused of heresy, which necessitated his fleeing England. Because of this, the first complete English Bible was actually printed on the Continent.
